I am into antiques and love the old ways that our ancestors used them and the way they lived. Old turn tables was an old way that our family would enjoy our Sunday afternoons. We would sit around and listen to old records and enjoy the music.

HUMN341 Assignment 1-2
This is my first blog so please excuse me if I do not make sense but I am trying it at least.
What is popular culture? Popular culture is a way of living an everyday life with your family, friends, associations with others, and community. It also is the way you see and understand music, television, newspaper, books, exercise, or to just sit and do nothing all the time is a way you want your life to be, that is the culture that you are going to live. Pop culture means to me that if you want to be religious or if you do not want to believe in God than that is your choice.
What does it mean to me? Popular culture to me is a variety of things to me. My pop culture is my family first, than I would say that it was my grandkids, and the last thing that my pop culture would be anything to do with a computer or a computer system. The environment around me is the culture that is popular to me.
What would you consider to be an example of a pop culture artifact? A pop culture artifact to me would an old turn table which you can play 78 rpm, 45 rpm, or a 33 rpm, or a tape player, which plays a record. We had record players when I was growing up and know we have CD players. An artifact for pop culture would be a piece of equipment or they way they lived to make a life for them and their families. You need music in your life to make it interesting.
And why would you choose it? I chose the turn tables or tape players because this was a way to listen to music and add music to your life. You need music to a life because if you did not have music can you imagine how boring it would be without it. It would be just like if you could not read or write what would you do to communicate.
Cindy, I am in love with antiques as well. Things back in the day were made with such more heart and quality. Now a days everything is plastic, made in China and doesn't last. It's sad. I have a tiny collection of vinyl records and my mom bought me a usb turntable and I can make digital files out of the records and make cd's out of them or download them into my ipod. It's awesome! So I guess it would be an updated modern version of your artifact. Seems like records have sort of made a come back lately with a certain group of younger people. I know a few collectors of punk rock and metal albums. I agree that life would be very boring without music, it is the one pop culture artifact that has lasted through the years, changed but lasted. Good Posting!
Antiques are such a great way to view our history and remember the ways things use to be. I was very young when we had record players but I do remember them. Playing records and dancing and singing around my room with my friends. Great memories. I think that is what antiques do, allow us to remember times in our past. You probably go to antique stores since you love them so much, truthfully I have been to a few but don't really get much out of it. I do find it interesting but get bored easily. Wish I could enjoy them as much as you do.
This is the first of many postings.
